[WIP] Meridian Commonwealth

Founded: 2169 Capital: Panama City Government: Federal presidential republic President: Elena Marín, 48 Population: ~1.5 billion

The Meridian Commonwealth is one of the five global powers of the 23rd century, spanning almost the entirety of North, Central, and South America, except Canada. It was formally established in 2169, following decades of economic integration, political instability, climate-driven migration, and increasingly close cooperation between the surviving governments of the Americas. Rather than being created through conquest, Meridian emerged from a series of continental treaties that gradually transferred national authority to a common federal government. The remaining sovereign states were eventually reorganized into constituent regions of a single Commonwealth.

Panama City was selected as the federal capital partly because of its symbolic position between North and South America, avoiding the political dominance that choosing one of the old continental capitals would have implied. Its location at the geographical crossroads of the Americas also gave the choice practical significance. By 2227, the city has grown into a vast modern metropolis and one of Earth's major political, financial, and transportation centers.

Meridian is governed as a federal presidential republic. Its current president, Elena Marín, is a 48-year-old centrist politician serving as both head of state and head of the federal executive. Legislative authority is divided between a popularly elected federal chamber and a second chamber representing the Commonwealth's constituent regions. Elections are competitive, political opposition is legal, and regional governments retain considerable authority over education, policing, infrastructure, and local law.
