(Memory Fantasy) The Congress Testimony 4
Story:
When the second session began, the blinds were already closed.
The chamber’s electric lights flattened every face into the same tired pallor. Fresh glasses of water stood beside cooling cups of coffee, and the folders before the intelligence delegation had multiplied during the recess.
Reika resumed her place along the side of the room. Her grandfather sat at the head of the table.
“The Ebonhart Corporation,” the intelligence chief began, “has increased its logistical activity significantly since the Red Moon event two weeks ago.”
A map appeared on the screen behind her. Shipping routes crossed dark blue water. Several ports were marked, though none had been circled as a confirmed point of entry.
“We have received information through foreign intelligence contacts suggesting that a substantial quantity of armaments is being moved toward Japan by sea.”
One of the generals leaned forward.
“What quantity?”
“We do not have a reliable figure.”
“What category of armaments?”
“The reports are incomplete.”
The general’s expression hardened.
The intelligence chief continued before she could interrupt again.
“The information remains unconfirmed. We have elevated monitoring to the highest alert level, but inspections and surveillance have not identified a corresponding abnormality at any harbor.”
Reika watched the map.
So many lines. So many possible arrivals. Nothing on the screen could tell them whether they were looking at an approaching shipment or a carefully constructed rumor.
“Then we have an allegation,” the general said.
“We have a warning,” the intelligence chief replied.
“Its credibility is being assessed.”
Minister Hououin turned a page. “Maintain the highest alert level.”
Several pens moved at once.
