EZO 31/50 | The Nachtian Code

The Nachtian Code asks a knight to protect the weak, show mercy and refuse avoidable cruelty.

Its ideals include restraint in war, rejection of a dishonorable first strike or ambush, and mercy toward an unarmed or defeated opponent. These demands shape how a knight fights as well as whom they serve.

Service itself is not simple obedience. Loyalty may be owed to a king or to the people; a cruel ruler can be questioned or resisted.

That creates the code's central difficulty. A command may be lawful yet cruel. A militarily useful decision may violate a knight's conscience. Mercy may preserve an enemy who will fight again.

Nacht Lawrence's reputation gave these principles enormous influence, but later generations inherited situations he could no longer decide for them.

The code is therefore both a moral standard and a source of conflict. Its history lives in the different answers knights gave when honor, survival and political authority ceased to agree.
