Ivireth Sunnia walked slowly through the monastery garden.

Autumn had transformed it.

The trees had begun surrendering their summer green to amber, copper, and crimson. Fallen leaves rested upon the paths and floated quietly across the ornamental ponds. Somewhere beyond the walls, the sea murmured beneath a grey sky.

She liked this season.

There was something honest about it.

Nothing in the garden seemed ashamed of changing.

Ivireth stopped beside an old flowering tree and touched one of its fading leaves.

The Inter-Order Arias Exhibition felt strangely distant now.

Aura.

Zyra.

Laura.

Even the fierce frontier cadet whose storm of violence had nearly broken against her Orchid Dance.

So many young people.

So many different paths.

And somehow, all of them seemed to be standing at the beginning of something.

Ivireth wondered what her own beginning would become.

She had once believed that becoming an Iriden's Founder meant simply protecting others. That compassion was enough. That if she remained kind, patient, and faithful, the path ahead would reveal itself naturally.

But lately, she had begun to understand that peace was not passive.

Sometimes protecting a garden meant standing between it and the storm.

Sometimes kindness required courage.

Sometimes a flower needed thorns.

She smiled faintly at the thought.

Grandmaster Eileen would probably have said it with considerably more theatricality.

Ivireth looked toward the autumn sky.

She did not know what the future would ask of her.

She only knew that she wanted to meet it without losing herself.

A leaf detached from the tree and landed softly in her palm.

Ivireth closed her fingers around it.

“Whatever comes,” she whispered, “let me be ready.”

The garden remained quiet.

But for the first time, the silence did not feel like waiting.

It felt like possibility.
