Urban legends: The Lady in White. Part 1

This is an urban legend similar to the previous one, and it is also widespread across the globe. In it, a woman dressed in white appears briefly in a rural area. Her story is usually linked to a local tragedy; these women have lost children or husbands, or were victims of betrayal, and their spirits wander restlessly, crying out for vengeance.

In medieval times, the appearance of this ghostly figure signaled that someone close—a family member or a neighbor—was about to die. In English tradition, the Lady in White guarded a treasure but died suddenly before she could reveal its hiding place to anyone. It is said that in the 19th century, the White Lady appeared three times to the son of the owners of Blenkinsopp Castle in Northumbria—though, admittedly, every castle in that part of England has its own ghost legends. The White Lady in Wales also guards a treasure; when a man summoned the courage to approach her, she rewarded him with half of it. Driven by greed, he took it all, but the Lady in White retaliated, using her supernatural powers to kill the greedy, unscrupulous man.
