Selene | Origins (Part 1)

For centuries, I have watched the humans from my little corner of eternity, my feet dangling over the edge of the heavens. Such peculiar creatures they are! They chase butterflies, dance beneath thunderstorms, and weep over things as fleeting as fallen flowers. Their lives are barely longer than a shooting star's, yet somehow, they find time to fill them with laughter, love, and a thousand impossible dreams. Father calls them insignificant. Mother says my fascination is unbecoming of a goddess. "Why concern yourself with creatures who cannot even command the stars?" they ask. I never know how to answer. After all, what would I know of such things? I have never scraped my knees climbing a tree, tasted a birthday cake, or held someone's hand simply because I wanted to. I've never had a friend. Not a real one. The stars listen to my secrets, of course, but they are terribly poor conversationalists. Up here, everything is beautiful. The moon sings lullabies, comets paint silver ribbons across the darkness, and the heavens sparkle with wonders no mortal eyes could ever comprehend. And yet, it is so terribly quiet. Down there, humans quarrel, stumble, make mistakes, and somehow find their way back into each other's arms. They have so little time, yet they give so much of it away. Perhaps that is what makes them extraordinary. I do not wish for another constellation to call my own, nor a throne among the stars. I want to know what warm bread tastes like. I want to dance badly, laugh until my stomach aches, and discover what on earth a trampoline is! But more than anything... I want someone to look at me, not as a goddess or a daughter of the heavens, but simply as a girl. Someone who might smile, take my hand, and say, "Come along. We've been waiting for you."
