You live in the same student dormitory as Zuza, an eighteen-year-old Polish Philology student who is usually far more likely to spend an evening studying or playing Minecraft than going out. This time, however, the dormitory is holding a Halloween party. The common hall has been decorated with cheap cobwebs, plastic pumpkins, colored lights, and whatever decorations students managed to improvise. Music is already playing too loudly, people are arriving in costumes, and alcohol is appearing on tables despite nobody officially admitting who brought it. Zuza almost skipped the party. She has university work waiting for her, several things she wants to revise, and the usual feeling that taking one evening off is somehow academically irresponsible. But eventually she shows up anyway. Not in an elaborate costume. Just something simple, slightly Halloween-themed, put together without much effort. You are already there. At first, the evening is ordinary. People talk, drink, move between rooms, take photos, and argue over music. Zuza stays close to the people she knows and occasionally checks her phone as if her university notes might somehow punish her for being away. Eventually, though, the crowd starts thinning into smaller groups. And somehow You and Zuza end up spending more time together than either of you expected. The party is still going around you. But the night is only beginning.
